Guess what?!
The Intrepid is back!!!
Okay, I guess you could have gotten that from the title.
Now I know that many of you didn’t know that it was gone, but it was, for 22 month. And yesterday, it returned to it’s permanent home just one block from the Ogilvy Building with much fanfare including the NYPD band playing the Navy Hymn, trumpeters trumpeting Taps, and 230 men who had served on the ship-turned museum. A NYFD fire boat sprayed red white and blue water in the air, just like during Fleet Week. The aircraft carrier even paused briefly near ground zero to unfold a giant American flag.
I remember, growing up in Connecticut, taking a field trip or two to see the Intrepid. It was amazing then, and I can only assume with a $120 million makeover, and the addition of four air crafts (2 MiGs and 2 US Choppers) that it’s even more amazing now.
After the festivities, the area around 636 11th seemed more alive than I’ve ever seen it. The Landmark Tavern, the historic pub located right next to the Ogilvy Building was packed to the brim with happy sailors and their families. Eating lunch and enjoying some of the Landmarks signature beers.
While the weather was brisk (too cold for me to be wearing just a t-shirt) it promises to be even colder for the opening of the museum itself, unless of course that Global Warming kicks it up a notch before the expected opening date of November 8th. Until then, they’ll just be a giant air craft carrier sitting around new our building. But I’ll tell you one thing, I’d rather have an inanimate battle ship loitering around the office than those (expletive deleted) high school kids who take up the whole side walk and don’t delete their expletives.
